The UKF is actively fulfilling the initiative of the World Karate Federation
aimed at attracting people with functional disorders to karate trainings in the frame of the project "Karate for the Handicapped People".
The Ukrainian Karate Federation (UKF) has started the programm in February, 2012. Close contacts with the National Committee of Sports for the Handicapped people of Ukraine were established. In July, a sports and rehabilitation training session made of 22 sportsmen and 6 coaches from three Ukrainian cities took place in the National Centre of Paralympic Training in the Crimea.
Today, the karate classes for handicapped persons are operating in six cities of the country under the charge of the centers of social and psychological rehabilitation of children and young people with functional disoders. Experienced and qualified trainers are working with their students on the volunteer basis. The work has just started and is going to move forth in a systematic and gradual way. The training process involves the close cooperation of trainers and rehabilitation workers. The specifics fo the sportsmen presuppose the two tasks: improvement of physical and psychological conditions and preparation of the most talented students for competitions.
After the successful performance of Ukrainian sportsmen at Paralympic games in London (the fourth team place), the UKF and the National Committee of Sports for Handicapped people have agreed to conduct a joint program, in the frame of which the karate classes will be taken by Paralympic sportsmen that are into different kinds of sports: the main goal of such trainings is to reinforce the fortitude and the will for victory.
This programm will work for the further poularization of karate in Ukraine and, along with that fulfillment of the program of the WKF The K Is On The Way.
